Dr. Roy’s workshops and lectures cover a wide range of pedagogical topics from practice efficiency to working with students with special needs.

Raag-time: Teaching Indian Classical Music

Indian Classical Music has remained elusive to the Western world, with very little music being faithfully translated to the piano. This workshop explores the basics of the traditional Indian Raag, its limited history in the Western world, and the work of British composer John Pitts (b. 1976).

Learn Faster, Memorize Better: The Benefits of Interleaved Practice

Interleaved practice is emerging as one of the most efficient forms of practicing.  During this workshop, attendees will learn about research on blocked and interleaved practice, the fundamentals of interleaved practice, and how to incorporate interleaving into lessons and practice sessions.

Repertoire Roadmaps

How teachers assign repertoire has a tremendous impact on their students’ progress and growth as musicians.  Repertoire Roadmaps take the guesswork out of assigning pieces by setting specific goals, breaking down pieces by their technical requirements, and establishing a roadmap of pieces that address these difficulties, leaving students better equipped to learn the pieces they dream about.

Structural Analysis as a Pedagogical Tool

Despite the stigma surrounding Heinrich Schenker and his method of analysis, within this system are tools that are applicable to everyday piano teaching. This workshop will explore basic reductive tools used in Schenkerian analysis, and how to apply them in an easy and practical way to help students learn and memorize music more effectively.

Music for Everyone: Teaching Strategies for Students with ADHD

Given recent studies indicating an increasing number of ADHD diagnoses in children, it is likely that private music teachers have or will encounter a student that exhibits symptoms of ADHD and/or other disorders.  This workshop will explore research on ADHD and provide teachers with immediately usable teaching and practice strategies to maximize learning in students with ADHD.

Immanent Narrative in Franz Liszt’s Vallée d’Obermann

In this workshop, explore a method of narrative analysis that delves deeply into the narrative elements within the score, drawing from the worlds of semiotics and literary criticism. This workshop concludes with a performance of Liszt’s Vallee d’Obermann.
